We live in an era where "seeing is no longer believing." AI technology has made it possible to create Deepfakes—videos and audio recordings where a person’s face or voice is replaced with someone else's with terrifying accuracy. As these tools become more accessible, knowing how to spot them is a vital digital skill.
What is a Deepfake?
Using "Deep Learning" (a type of AI), software can analyze thousands of images of a person to recreate their likeness in a video. While this is used for fun in Hollywood movies, it is also used by scammers to spread fake news or commit financial fraud.
How to Spot a Deepfake (The Checklist):
Look at the Eyes: Creating realistic eye movements is still hard for AI. Look for "unnatural blinking" (too much or not at all) or eyes that don't seem to follow the direction of the head.
The "Glitchy" Edges: Pay close attention to the area where the face meets the hair or the neck. Deepfakes often have a subtle "blur" or "flicker" in these spots, especially when the person moves quickly.
The Lighting Test: Does the shadow on the nose match the light coming from the background? AI often struggles to synchronize the lighting on the face with the rest of the environment.
Listen to the Rhythm: AI voices are getting better, but they often lack emotional nuance. Listen for "robotic" pauses, strange pronunciations of names, or a lack of natural breathing sounds.
The "Profile" Test: If the person in the video turns their head fully to the side, the AI often "breaks" and the face might distort for a millisecond.
What to do if you are suspicious:
Double-check the source: Is this video posted by an official account or a random profile?
Search for the context: If a politician or celebrity said something shocking, major news outlets will surely be reporting on it.
Slow it down: Watch the video at 0.5x speed. Glitches and facial distortions become much more obvious in slow motion.
TileTechZone Tip: Be extra careful with "emergency" video calls or voice notes from friends asking for money. Scammers now use AI Voice Cloning to mimic your loved ones. Always have a "safe word" with your family for such cases!
