In today’s digital age, privacy is paramount. Whether you are sharing a PC with family members or just want to keep your desktop organized, knowing how to hide sensitive data is a must-have skill. While there are many third-party apps available, Windows 11 has powerful built-in tools that can do the job instantly.
In this guide, we will show you two methods: the Standard way and the "Ninja" Command Line method.
Method 1: The Standard "Hidden" Attribute (Beginner Friendly)
This is the quickest way to hide a folder from plain sight. It’s perfect for basic privacy.
Step-by-Step:
Right-click on the file or folder you want to hide.
Select Properties from the context menu.
In the General tab, look for the Attributes section at the bottom.
Check the box that says Hidden.
Click Apply and then OK.
How to see them again:
If you need to access your hidden files, open any folder, click on View in the top menu, hover over Show, and select Hidden items.
Method 2: The "Ninja" Method (Using Terminal/CMD)
The standard method is easy to bypass. If you want a more "invisible" approach, you can use the Attribute command. This method makes the folder look like a protected system file, meaning it won’t show up even if "Show hidden items" is turned on.
Step-by-Step:
Press
Win + Sand type Terminal or CMD and open it.Type the following command (replace the path with your actual folder path):
attrib +h +s +r "C:\Your\Folder\Path"
+h: Makes it hidden.
+s: Marks it as a System file.
+r: Makes it Read-only.Press Enter.
Note: The folder is now completely invisible to the Windows File Explorer!
How to bring it back:
To reveal the folder again, simply run the same command but replace the plus signs with minus signs:
attrib -h -s -r "C:\Your\Folder\Path"Important Security Tip
While these methods are great for keeping files away from casual users, they do not encrypt your data. For maximum security of highly sensitive information, consider using BitLocker or a password-protected ZIP file.
