We’ve all been there: forgetting a password, getting locked out of an account, or worrying about a data breach. But what if you didn't need a password at all? Enter Passkeys, the new security standard from Google, Apple, and Microsoft that is making traditional passwords obsolete.
What is a Passkey?
Instead of a string of characters like "MyPassword123!", a Passkey uses your device’s own security. To log in, you simply use your fingerprint, face scan (FaceID), or your phone’s screen lock PIN. It’s faster than typing and nearly impossible for hackers to steal.
Why are Passkeys better?
Phishing Proof: Since there is no actual password to type, a hacker cannot trick you into giving it away on a fake website.
No More "Forgot Password": You don't have to remember anything. Your "key" is stored securely on your phone or computer.
End-to-End Encryption: Even if a website is hacked, your biometric data is never shared. The site only knows that "the correct device" authorized the login.
How to set it up today:
Google: Go to your Google Account settings > Security > Passkeys.
Social Media: Look under "Password and Security" in apps like TikTok, X (Twitter), and Instagram to enable Passkeys.
Shopping: Sites like Amazon and eBay already support this for lightning-fast, secure checkouts.
Can I still use my password?
Yes, most sites allow you to keep your password as a backup, but once you try a Passkey, you’ll never want to go back to typing again.
TileTechZone Tip: If you lose your phone, don't worry! Passkeys are usually synced via your iCloud or Google Account, so you can recover them on your new device easily.
